THE CUSTOMER

The University of Penn State’s Recreational Center is a multipurpose arena on the west side of the campus. With a total seating capacity of approximately 6,846, the large historic venue was originally built in 1928 and is home to Penn State’s men’s and women’s gymnastics teams, men’s and women’s volleyball teams and their wrestling team.

The facility also hosts a large variety of recreational activities including handball, racquetball and squash.

THE LED LIGHT FIXTURES HAVE A RATED LIFE OF OVER 50,000 HOURS AND ARE NOW INSTALLED IN LOCATIONS THAT CAN BE EASILY ACCESSED FOR MAINTENANCE MOVING FORWARD.

THE CHALLENGE

Being such an old historic building the facility operators recognized a need to switch out the old Metal Halide lighting for new efficient LED’s as they were due for an upgrade.The previous installation required frequent and costly maintenance while producing inadequate lighting and energy efficiency.

Maintaining correct light uniformity was challenging given the limitations and degradation of the metal halide fixtures. Due to the facilities historic design, Ursa Lighting was required to do a one-off approach by retrofitting the previous classic refractors to the new upgraded Helios fixtures, while mounting these lights to the pre-existing locations and electrical configuration.

Operators were also looking to improve the facilities ability to deliver more elaborate productions to better engage its fans. Ursa’s dimming feature on the Helios fixture allowed them to do just that.

OUR SOLUTION

Ursa Lighting provided Penn State with 82 600 watt Helios LED fixtures that were installed over the court area and 25 Helios 320 watt fixtures were installed over the seating areas, as this technology is clearly the way to go. Ursa’s fixtures give the facility improvements like instant-on and individual control through a full dimming range, this stands to save them even more on their energy bill. It was also important for Penn State to be able to switch the lights off entirely then switch them on again seconds later for showmanship prior to the games, this had not been possible with the previous metal halide lamps. Ursa’s Helios LED’s can get to complete power in just a few seconds.

THE RESULTS

Having Penn State utilize LED lighting, the university was able to reduce energy costs and consumption while creating a superior visual experience. The flexibility of the dimming feature allowed operations to run the lights at half of the wattage for the majority of the day during intramural sports and activities, this drastically reduced the facilities energy consumption while light levels on the court are now more than double what they were under the metal halide lamps.

Straightforward rigging, long life expectancy apx. 50,000 hours and Ursa’s “bullet-proof” design have been keeping athletes and fans safe, comfortable and concentrated on the game.
